Is the used car business for lazy people?

Many years ago, unemployed with a wife and two kids plus the third on the way (the last one will be 48yrs old this sept.) I am in desperation mode and with the worst economy since, now I believe.

Anyway. my dad invited me to lunch at the mall one day, and to make a long story short he writes me a check to match the $750 I had in my account. That was bigger money than its today, and it was a loan he said, and I didn't have to pay it back, just in case I lost it all.

So, with $1500 to my name, I embarked myself on a lifelong career that has more ups and downs than a basketball. Stated out with a local used car dealer that charged me $100 per car, regardless of whether I made money or lost it. A real rip-off, correct?

We went to the Florida Auto Auction and purchased an MG Midget color green and nasty inside and out. I took it home and detailed it for one whole day from morning to dust. It looked totally different. it was a gorgeous little convertible now. I took it down to the corner of my street and Atlantic Blvd with a "For Sale" an Asking Price of $2450 and my home phone number (no cells back in those days, sorry!). I walked back to my house and my wife tells me someone just called about some car (she never really got involved with my business). Surprised of course, I called that person and long story short again, I made a bit over $800 profit, clear money. The following week I purchased two vehicles, and eventually I was making more money that the Dealer whose license I was using, and he doubled his fees and became rather nasty with me, so I got my own Used Car Dealer license - I have been self-employed ever since.

If anyone actually reads this and want to hear the Business for Lazy People part, please let me know.

Thank you
